This session went beyond the basics and emphasized a systematic, clinically relevant approach to interpreting chest radiographs.
Topics covered included:
- RIPE & P-VERB: How to assess rotation, inspiration, penetration, exposure, and other key technical factors
- Common views: PA, AP, lateral, and decubitus — when and why they're used
- Radiographic anatomy: Lung zones, hila, mediastinum, cardiac silhouette, diaphragm, gastric bubble
- ABCDEFGH system for reading CXRs: airway, bones, cardiac shadow, diaphragm, effusion, lung fields, gastric bubble, hila/mediastinum
- Cardiothoracic ratio and signs of pathology like heart failure, pericardial effusion, and pulmonary hypertension
- "White" and "black" lungs: Differentiating effusions, consolidations, masses, pneumothorax, and cavities
- Silhouette sign, mediastinal widening, hemithorax shift – interpretation tips and red flags
- Common pitfalls in MDT presentation and interpretation
The session wrapped up with a practical quiz and takeaway message: Use structure, check your quality indicators, and always present clearly.
